PPC, CTR, IP, CPM, MMR, etc. etc. etc. – it’s almost never ending. But, one of the more important words

With everything you can do for your business as far as marketing and in digital marketing in particular, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) stands out as a fundamental strategy that can make or break an online presence. Before we get to some specifics on SEO, and my typical recommendations let’s discuss the basics. This blog post delves into the meaning of SEO in the context of digital marketing, exploring its significance, key components, and practical tips to enhance your visibility and reach online.

What is SEO?

SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization, refers to the process of optimizing your website and its content to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). These days they should really just call it “GO” (google optimization) as so much search traffic and web traffic overall is dominated by the Google search engine and the Chrome browser.

The goal of SEO is to increase the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results, which are unpaid. You’re effectively doing what it takes to:

  • Get Google To Trust You
  • Get Google To Rank Your Website Higher
  • Get Google to Trust/Rank Your Website Higher Than Competitors

SEO is crucial because it makes your website more visible, which means more traffic and more opportunities to convert prospects into customers.

Here’s an example:

I did a search for “Estero Marketing Company” – and Olympia Marketing appears #7 in the results. The trick with SEO is … asking yourself a couple questions:

  • Is that particular search relevant to your audience?
  • Are your customers searching for that?
  • If they ARE searching for that and find you… will they “convert” (email you, fill out a form, or pick up the phone)?

If all of the above is answered in the affirmative then a couple other questions come into play (which we’ll answer below):

  • Why are you only #7 in placement overall?
  • What can we do to increase this placement?

In some ways you can think of SEO as the yellow pages, but instead of just titling your company AAA Plumbing to come up first (or paying for an ad) – you actually need to do some technical WORK – as Google rewards websites and companies based on how helpful they are.

Key Components of SEO

At the CORE of SEO I like to talk to clients, potential clients, and those I’m educating about the field that it’s basically TWO major things…

  • Your Website: What is actually happening on the website, including your content, keywords, frequency of updates, code, etc.
  • Off Site “Stuff”: What on the web is out there about your company that will “look good” in Google’s eyes – this includes other websites mentioning you, news mentions, PR, links in to your website. The list is actually pretty small.

By knowing the above and combining that with what we know about Google (they’re not explicit about what they’re looking for – so SEO is as much art as it is a science) we can increase the things that look good, minimize the things that look bad to Google and grow your website in ranking – to help you achieve traffic. Let’s look at some additional specifics that everyone always likes to cover:

Keywords: At the heart of SEO are keywords. These are the terms and phrases that users enter into search engines. Understanding the right keywords to target, based on your audience’s needs and search behaviors, is essential for effective SEO.

Content: Content is the vehicle you use to reach and engage audiences. Not only does it need to be high-quality, informative, and relevant, but it also needs to be optimized for the keywords you’re targeting.

On-Page SEO: This involves optimizing individual web pages in order to rank higher and earn morerelevant traffic. On-page refers to both the content and HTML source code of a page that can be optimized, as opposed to off-page SEO which refers to links and other external signals.

Off-Page SEO: It focuses on enhancing the authority of your domain through the act of getting links from other websites. A good volume of high-quality backlinks tells search engines that your website is valuable and worth ranking well.

Technical SEO: This aspect of SEO focuses on improving the technical elements of your website to increase the ranking of its pages in the search engines. This includes improving the site’s loading speed, ensuring it is mobile-friendly, securing it with HTTPS, and enhancing usability.

Why is SEO Important in Digital Marketing?

Although SEO is important, and powerful – I NEVER start projects off worried too much about SEO. Yes, SEO is one of the most powerful forms of marketing, but in our modern “I want it now culture” virtually no clients are ready to understand that SEO is generally a multi-year process (particularly if you have a new website or a new business). I did have a recent scenario however, where – because of a brand new market in the AI space, SEO was able to absolutely EXPLODE a business for virtually nothing, albeit once the owners had gotten a taste for the sweet sweet SEO traffic and huge revenues, they ended up strategically investing in SEO ongoing.

SEO is one of the most cost-effective marketing strategies because it targets users who are actively looking for your products and services online. The inbound nature of SEO helps businesses save money as opposed to outbound strategies like cold-calling. By targeting users searching for terms related to your industry, SEO is more qualified than many other marketing strategies, resulting in cost-savings for companies.

Practical Tips for Implementing Effective SEO Strategies

Audit your website: Understanding the current state of your website is the first step in implementing effective SEO strategies. Use tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to identify areas of improvement.
